Universities without Departments

Sample universities or colleges that don't have departments but do have majors.

  1. Kean University - (in New Jersey, enrollment 11,812). In 2010 a new president eliminated all departments during a financial crises. The faculty strongly resisted this at the time, protesting both the measure and the procedures used to do it, but follow-up is needed to determine whether this has helped the university recover financially.
  2. Both New Jersey regional state universities - Ramapo (enrollment 5800~) and Stockton (enrollment 7800~) -- have "Schools" and "Programs" exactly as the Chancellor is proposing. (Stockton was established in 1969 as a college and became a university only in 2015. US News & World Report ranks Stockton University at 41 among "Northern regional universities" and Ramapo at 37. SIU is ranked 216 among "national universities" so there's no direct comparison there.)

Colleges that don't have traditional majors:

  1. Evergreen State College (Washington state, enrollment 4400+) is a famously progressive school that has BA degrees only in "Arts," "Sciences" or both. Within this, it has optional "areas of emphasis" in over 60 study "fields" that correspond to standard major degrees as well as Native American studies, gender studies and other fields. Evergreen also offers three Masters degrees in Environmental Studies, Public Administration and Teaching.
